FLAC is delighted to announce that a prominent local authority has retained it to undertake a strategic review of its tree service provision. The review will benchmark this against national standards and identify areas where improvements in service delivery and / or best value can be achieved. FLAC was awarded the instruction after tenders were invited from all Arboricultural Association Registered Consultants; it is not thought that price was the determining factor.

A Section 78 Appeal has recently been determined that included the Inspector accepting that a 1000 lorry per day HGV route through Ancient Woodland could be delivered without unacceptable impact. The route was the subject of a meticulous multi-disciplinary design study by FLAC, Aspect Ecology, Barton Willmore Design and Ardent Consulting Engineers. As well as the physical structure being fully detailed according to lowest impact principles, it was also proposed to use development funding to reverse the structural and biodiversity decline of the woodland that had set in following the Great Storm of 1987. FLAC Principal JFL considers that this establishes a working precedent, whereby development within Ancient Woodland can be accommodated where it is demonstrated that a) there would be no material harm arising from it and b) a clearly identifiable benefit would accrue.

The major new community in East Devon known as Cranbrook has broken ground, with first phase infrastructure construction well under way. FLAC has been involved in the project since 2005 with our blueprint for tree retention helping shape the development at a strategic level. Challenges include the successful intergration within the design of numerous veteran trees and high quality hedgerows, as well their physical protection during construction. For more information about Cranbrook, please visit:

http://www.exeterandeastdevon.gov.uk/Cranbrook/

Also starting on site is a new regional Marie Curie Cancer Care hospice in Solihull. FLAC has been intimately involved in this project since its inception, and provided crucial evidence in support of the facility during often febrile planning negotiations, conducted against a backdrop of occasionally bitter local opposition to development on a greenfield site. Fortunately, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council Members appreciated the benefits that the new hospice would deliver and consent was granted early in 2010. FLAC is now engaged to ensure proper protection of trees agreed for retention, and is working with the contractors Willmott Dixon to deliver the project to the end-users. The new hospice is the subject of a concerted fundrasing effort; to find out how you can help please visit:

Design and mitigation advice provided by FLAC, as well as on-site arboricultural monitoring of sensitive operations, played a key role in minimizing arboricultural impact.
